An Introduction To Techniques Employed in Complex Cloth
The techniques involved to produce the rich and complex printed surfaces of ‘complex cloth’, are created using surface design processes like dyeing, color removal/discharge, painting, printing and foiling on natural fibres. Layered imagery is developed using traditional printmaking methods of silk screen printing, stamping, stenciling, lino block printing, transfer printing, hand painting, mono printing and digital imaging.

The processes can also include other traditional textile techniques like batik, shibori, mud cloth, natural dye processes, embossing, rubbings and drawing in conjunction with the ‘complex cloth’ techniques to create exciting contemporary artcloth works of rich visual depth and complexity.

Knowledge of the basic principles of color is essential to producing colors and combinations that work well as are the underlying design principles of contrast, size, shape, texture, value and scale.

The "In Pursuit of Complex Cloth: Layered Printing Approaches" workshop focused on the above principles in tandem with personal design development, design formats, materials & product information and occupational health & safety information.

Workshop Introduction
Today's post highlights outcomes from Pauline Cosgrove doing Workshop No. 6 in the 2017 Art Quill Studio Workshop Program - In Pursuit of Complex Cloth: Layered Printing Approaches. For Australian enquiries about workshops please email me at - Marie-Therese. For overseas enquiries these workshops may be held in overseas venues provided that there are enough participants per workshop (10-15 participants) and that within each country a sufficient number of workshops can be organized in order to make the journey cost-effective (5-10 workshops). Please email me at - Marie-Therese - to initiate a discussion on the feasibility of such an overseas venture.

Master Classes are also available. For more details of these Master Classes email me at - Marie-Therese. For Master Class outcomes see - Barbara Scott. On-line classes will be available in 2018.

Two Day Workshop Synopsis:
In Pursuit of Complex Cloth: Layered Printing Approaches
Workshop Outcomes of Pauline Cosgrove

The two day "In Pursuit of Complex Cloth: Layered Printing Approaches Workshop" was held at Art Quill Studio in Arcadia Vale, NSW, Australia on the 4th and 5th September 2017.

Workshop Description
This two day workshop was dedicated to exploring and mastering complex relationships on the substrate surface using complex printed layering and overprinting techniques. Using a variety of printing tools, processes and color combinations, participants were introduced to the underlying principles of color, contrast, value, scale and texture. Below are workshop outputs created by Pauline Cosgrove.

Pauline's Artist Statement
I'm a "textile tragic" from way back. After completing courses in screen-printing, colour and design in the 1980s and running a small screen-printing business, I now have the luxury to explore the many different disciplines involved in textile embellishment. I've pinched, scrunched, wrapped, tied and dyed and then repeated the process. I've hand-painted, discharged, overprinted and stamped and I never cease to be amazed at the unexpected results - I just love that surprise element!

My inspiration comes from the numerous patterns, textures and beautiful organic shapes I find in nature. I'm also drawn to the many and varied possibilities of color - layering, mixing and overprinting to create unique textile works.

Pauline's Workshop Outputs
Two-Day Workshop Synopsis (Day One)
Monochromatic Color Study Projects

Pauline Cosgrove working on one of her monochromatic color studies.

Value study using hue, tints and shades.

Contrast study using size, scale, order and value.

Contrast study using color values based on the cloth hue.

Value Study employing depth exploration.

Two-Day Workshop Synopsis (Day Two)
Advanced on techniques learnt on Day One and introduced the use of various additional printing tools, materials, media and printing formats on multi-dyed cloth backgrounds. Color theory in tandem with design theory was explored in great depth via discussions, samples and exercises. An exciting program!

Color Schemes and Design Study Projects
