Disperse Dye Information
Disperse dyes are light fast, wash fast and produce strong hues on synthetics. They are produced in a powdered form and so you must wear a mask when working with the dyes in their powder state. The powders are mixed with very warm to hot water. The intensity of hue is determined by the amount of dye that is mixed with the water; that is, less dye will result in a pale color whilst more dye will result in very intense color. The dyes are transparent (i.e. printing a blue area over a yellow will produce green) and so lend themselves to layering and overprinting to build up rich and complex surfaces as well as create delicate and subtle imagery. The dyes can be intermixed to create your own suite of palette colors - see previous disperse dyes posts for more dye information.

Five-Day Workshop Synopsis
This workshop – “Melding Experiences: New Landscapes Using Disperse Dyes and Transfer Printing” - was organized by the Surface Design Association (SDA) as part of the Confluence conference post-workshop program. It was held at McNeal Hall on the University of Minnesota’s St. Paul campus from June 13th – 17th 2011.

Karie Amstutz (USA), Dar (Darlene) Brooks (USA), Dotti (Dorothy) Day (USA), Katherine Dunlevey (USA), Jennifer Fay (USA), Camy (Camile) Kilmer (USA), Helda Klouth (Netherlands), Ingrid Lincoln (Canada), Barbara Martinson (USA), Liv Samset (Norway) Sheryl Schwyhart (USA) and Lesley Turner (Canada) attended the workshop.

The workshop melded student’s experiences as valuable resources to create new artistic landscapes using dye sublimation processes that included complex multiple resist and overprinting.

Participants were introduced to multiple layering and resist, using flora as “the” thematic experience. Among the processes, one of the techniques they employed was the tutors’ signature flora technique, which she has termed “MultiSperse Dye Sublimation (MSDS)”. Employing papers, stencils, brushes and flora, participants created richly colored, textural and vibrant 3-dimensional effects on polyester and synthetic fabrics.

In summary, it was a fun and exciting workshop, where individual instruction and experimentation forged the potential of each participant. All levels were welcome to attend. See participants outputs below.
